Company Overview

Chuffed is an Australia-based crowdfunding platform for social enterprises, nonprofits, and community projects. Like Zeffy and Givebutter, Chuffed funds its operations through an optional donor tip at checkout. Donors can choose a tip amount (including $0), and the tip goes to Chuffed to keep the platform running.

Chuffed's documentation describes the tip model in their pricing article and in how to give an optional tip.

How Chuffed's Tip Model Works

At checkout, donors see a prompt to leave a tip to Chuffed. The tip is optional — donors can select $0 — but the prompt appears in the donation flow, adding a decision point at the moment of generosity.

Two things worth considering:

  1. The tip is a payment to Chuffed, not a charitable gift to the beneficiary. Chuffed is a for-profit company. Under IRS rules on charitable contributions (and equivalent rules in Australia and the UK), payments to a for-profit service provider are generally not tax-deductible for the donor, even when they travel alongside a charitable gift.
  2. The prompt changes the donor experience. Whether the donor leaves a tip or selects $0, the act of being asked introduces friction into the giving experience. Donors who intended to give $50 to a cause now have to decide whether to also give to the platform.

GiveLink takes a different approach: the platform fee is charged to the nonprofit and disclosed in the pricing page up-front. Donors see only the gift they intended to make. No tip prompt, no pre-selected contribution, no default slider.

Who Should Choose Each

Choose Chuffed if:

  • You are based in Australia or the UK and need strong regional support
  • You primarily run crowdfunding-style campaigns
  • You're comfortable with your donors seeing tip prompts at checkout

Choose GiveLink if:

  • You want your donors to have a clean checkout with no platform prompts
  • You need Coordinator weekly briefing and Stewardship suggestions
  • You want public API/MCP access when it launches
  • You believe paying a transparent 1% fee is better than passing costs to donors
