Cultivation

Cultivation is the process of building relationships with prospective donors before asking for a gift. It involves education, engagement, and trust-building over time.

Cultivation is the intentional process of building a relationship with a prospective donor before making a fundraising ask. It involves educating the prospect about your mission, engaging them with your work, and building the trust necessary for a meaningful gift.

Why It Matters for Fundraising

Asking for a gift too early is one of the most common fundraising mistakes. Cultivation ensures that when you do make the ask, the donor already understands your impact, trusts your organization, and feels connected to the cause. Well-cultivated donors give larger gifts, give more frequently, and stay loyal longer than donors who were asked without preparation.

The Cultivation Process

Effective cultivation follows a progression: identification (finding potential donors), qualification (confirming interest and capacity), engagement (tours, events, meetings, communications), and solicitation. The timeline varies — cultivating a major gift prospect might take 12-18 months, while a mid-level donor might be ready in weeks.
