Donor Fatigue

Donor fatigue occurs when supporters become overwhelmed or disengaged from excessive fundraising appeals, leading to decreased giving and increased attrition.

Donor fatigue is the declining responsiveness that occurs when donors receive too many fundraising appeals or feel overwhelmed by constant requests for money. It manifests as lower response rates, smaller gifts, and eventually lapsed donors.

Why It Matters for Fundraising

Donor fatigue is one of the leading causes of donor attrition. The nonprofit sector's average retention rate hovers around 45%, and over-solicitation is a significant contributor. When donors feel like they're just an ATM rather than a valued partner, they stop giving. Balancing the need for revenue with respect for donor attention is one of fundraising's most important tensions.

How to Prevent It

Effective strategies include segmenting communications so donors receive relevant appeals rather than everything, varying your messaging between asks and gratitude, providing impact updates between solicitations, and respecting communication preferences. The ratio of thank-you and impact communications to solicitations should be at least 2:1.
