Donor Pyramid

A donor pyramid is a visual model showing the progression of donor relationships from first-time small gifts at the base to major and planned gifts at the top.

A donor pyramid is a conceptual model that illustrates the levels of donor engagement and giving, from first-time small donors at the wide base to major gift and planned giving donors at the narrow top. It visualizes the journey donors take as their relationship with your organization deepens.

Why It Matters for Fundraising

The donor pyramid helps organizations understand that major donors don't appear out of nowhere — they're developed over time from the base. A healthy fundraising program has a wide base of annual donors, a strong mid-level segment, and a growing pool of major gift prospects. When the base is weak, the pipeline for future major gifts dries up.

Pyramid Levels

A typical donor pyramid includes (from bottom to top): first-time donors, repeat annual donors, mid-level donors, major gift donors, and planned giving/legacy donors. Each level requires different cultivation and stewardship strategies. The goal is to move donors upward through personalized engagement and increasingly deep relationships.

Our standing commitments

  • 1.No hidden fees. Any amount the donor is asked to cover is shown with a full breakdown — platform fee and processing fee itemized — before they submit.
  • 2.Every dollar you intended reaches your nonprofit. The fees you see on this page are the fees you pay — no tips, no surprise markup.
  • 3.We never call our fee a “tip” or a “contribution.” It's a fee. We name it. We show the number.
