Feasibility Study

A feasibility study is a confidential assessment conducted before a capital campaign to determine whether a nonprofit can realistically achieve its fundraising goal.

A feasibility study is a structured assessment — typically conducted by an outside consultant — that evaluates whether a nonprofit can successfully achieve a major fundraising goal, usually for a capital campaign. It involves confidential interviews with key stakeholders, donors, and community leaders.

Why It Matters for Fundraising

Launching a capital campaign without a feasibility study is one of the biggest risks a nonprofit can take. The study reveals whether your goal is realistic, which donors are likely to give at what levels, what concerns exist about the project, and how the community perceives your organization. A feasibility study can save an organization from a failed campaign that damages reputation and donor relationships.

The Process

An outside consultant typically interviews 30-50 key stakeholders confidentially. They assess donor capacity and willingness, community perception, organizational readiness, and campaign leadership potential. The final report recommends whether to proceed, adjust the goal, or delay the campaign.
